  • Hi there.

  • This is Harry.

  • Welcome back to our english podcast, where we try to help you with english grammar and other aspects of English to help you improve fluency and your ability to communicate with people.

  • We usually give you some sentences, but just for a change, I'm going to focus and this one in some english expressions.

  • And the english expressions I have for you today are english expressions and how to say no in a different way.

  • No, obviously is a very easy word.

  • No.

  • Or as in French, no.

  • But when we say no, sometimes it can come across a bit rude.

  • Do you want to go for a drink?

  • No.

  • Would you like something to eat?

  • No.

  • Will we go to the cinema?

  • No.

  • So it can come across a little bit rude, even though you may not intend it to be so.

  • So here are some ways in which you can say it with a slightly better or more relaxed or friendly meaning.

  • First one, I'm afraid not.

  • I'm afraid not or I am afraid not.

  • Okay, so it's a little bit formal, but we use it when we want to tell somebody that unfortunately we will not be doing what they ask or unfortunately will not be attending something that they are going to attend.
