Hi there.
This is Harry, and welcome back to our english grammar lessons, where we try to help you with some aspects of the english language to improve written and verbal skills.
I thought I'd make a little change this week for a couple of our sentences.
So instead of actually having sentences, I'm going to use some english expressions and I'll explain those to you.
So for the first podcast, we're going to talk about english expressions concerning time.
So I'm going to give you three particular expressions using time, explain them and give you examples when you can use them.
So the first one, time to spare.
Time to spare.
Spare, spelt spare.
And when we have time to spare, it means we have time on our hands, we have free time, and time when we don't have to do something.
So a good example of this would be we have to produce some document or some paper for our boss or a professor, whoever that might be.
And there's a deadline, a time deadline.
And he tells you or she tells you it has to be submitted by 05:00 on Wednesday afternoon.
So you're working really hard to produce and prepare it, and you get it completed by 04:00 so you're absolutely thrilled, you're delighted because you have completed your assignment, your document with time to spare, meaning I have saved myself an hour.
I was supposed to have it in by 05:00.
I got it completed by 04:00 so I have time to spare.
Time that you didn't expect to have.
Okay.
Another way in which we can use time to spare is when we are talking to a friend and he wants the help to paint a room or fix his car or go and collect something, and you say, yeah, I've got a bit of time to spare, meaning I've got some free time, I can help you.
Okay, so that's the expression, time to spare.
