Hi there.
And here is the second sentence for this week.
Again, we're looking at reported speech, but in this case we're looking at different verbs that we can use instead of say and tell.
And in this situation, we're using the verb to accuse.
So as always, I'm going to read the sentence for you twice, first time to give you a general understanding, and the second situation for you to understand more specifics within the sentence.
Okay, so here's the first reading, when you are ready.
A number ten source accused Mister Hammond of undermining the UK's negotiating stance.
And the second reading, a number ten source accused Mister Hammond of undermining the UK's negotiating stance.
So as I said here, we're again using reported speech, but in this particular situation, we're not using the verb to say or to tell.
We're using some of these other verbs.
And there are many, many verbs you can use with reported speech.
To accuse, to demand, to suggest, to recommend, to advise.
Okay?
So the most important thing is some of them are followed by the infinitive to, and others are followed by the ing.
And in the sentence that I've given you here, we're using the ing.
So a number ten source accused Mister Hammond of undermining, and here's the ing of the verb to undermine.
So accused is followed by the InG format.
So the next verb after accused will always take the Ing format.
So a number ten source accused Mister Hammond of undermining, okay, and to undermine means to weaken, okay, so we could also accuse Mister Hammond of weakening, so again we'd have the ing.
So weakening and undermining are synonyms, okay, so they have a similar meaning.
