单集文稿 ...

  • Hello there again.

  • This is Harry, and welcome to another one of our podcasts in relation to english grammar, english sentences, and a detailed explanation as to the structure.

  • As always, I'm going to read the sentence that I have for you now twice, and then I'll give you an explanation as to the particular grammar points included in it, and hopefully then you'll have a good understanding as to how to use it.

  • As always, if you have any questions, you can follow us up and I'll give you the details later on.

  • Okay, so let's begin.

  • So the sentence for this particular podcast, reading one, it was raining hard when we arrived at the railway station.

  • Second reading, it was raining hard when we arrived at the railway station.

  • Okay, so in this sentence, we're using the past continuous of the verb and also the past simple.

  • Okay, so at the beginning of the sentence, we can use past continuous because we're explaining a situation that was happening at a particular time.

  • So it was raining hard.

  • Okay, so we're using continuous there because when we got to the railway station, it was raining, okay, so in the middle of us getting to the railway station, the rain was coming down very heavy.

  • So we can use past because we're talking about the past, but past continuous because it was a continuous action, it was raining hard.

  • Okay, we use the word hard to mean strong or heavy.

  • So when you're in one of those rainstorms where an umbrella is of no use to you and you're completely wet, you can say, it was raining hard, it was raining heavy, the rain was strong, or as the English like to say, it was raining cats and dogs.

  • Okay, so here we have it was raining hard, past continuous, when.

  • So we're talking about a particular time word.

  • So this is one of these words that joins two clauses.

  • It was raining hard when at the time we arrived, when we got to the railway station.

  • So we arrived past simple at preposition at the railway station.

  • And we always use at when we're talking about locations.
