Hi there and welcome back.
This is Harry, and we're catching up again in relation to my help with your english grammar, English speaking, and other conversational aspects to help you improve your overall knowledge of English.
As always, I'm going to read the sentence I have for you now twice.
The first time to give you a general understanding, and the second time to go through the grammar points in a little bit more detail.
Okay, if you're ready, we'll begin.
First reading, I wish I had visited you last year when I had the chance.
Second reading, I wish I had visited you last year when I had the chance.
Okay, so this is somebody who.
Who has a little bit of a regret, okay.
And they're talking about something in the past.
So when we use or looking at a regret, we can use I wish.
Okay, be careful here, because I wish can also be used for a future.
But that's when you hope, you know, I wish I get, or I could get a bicycle for my birthday.
So that's a hope in the future.
But when we're looking at the past and talking about regret, we use it with a slightly different meaning.
I regret, I wish I had visited you.
So the person is saying that they regret what?
They regret that they didn't visit you sometime in the past.
Perhaps you were ill, perhaps you were visiting the country for a short period of time.
Perhaps there was some family business, and the person would have liked to have visited you, but for some reason they didn't.
