  • The year is 1000 BC and we're in the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America, in what is now southeast Mexico.

  • It's a warm evening and the setting sun casts deep blood orange rays across a sprawling settlement.

  • To one side, ultramarine waters glistening.

  • To the other, lush green fields stretch seemingly into eternity, abundant with fruit trees and flowering plants, this tropical paradise is home to the Maya people.

  • As we wander along the edge of the settlement, we see telltale signs of Mayan life the dying embers of several fires, thatched shelters, as well as discarded seashells and sacks of beans.

  • We even spot a pen of turkeys scratching at the maize seeds scattered in their enclosure.

  • But we can't see or hear the people who call this village home just yet.

  • That's because it's bedtime and they're sleeping carefully not to wake anyone.

  • We tread lightly across the golden sand, peering into their homes.
