  • What is the relationship between philosophy and technology?

  • How can technology help philosophy?

  • And what does philosophy have to tell us about technology?

  • David Chalmers at NYU is one of the most interesting contemporary philosophers.

  • He argues that technology is literally expanding our minds.

  • David Chalmers, welcome to philosophy bites.

  • Thanks.

  • Great to be here.

  • The topic we're going to focus on today is techno philosophy and the extended mind.

  • Could you just begin by just saying briefly what techno philosophy is?

  • Techno philosophy, as I think of it, is a two way interaction between philosophy and technology.

  • Thinking philosophically about technology, like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, smartphones, in order to help make sense of them, but at the same time, using technology to shed light on some traditional philosophical questions.

  • Using virtual reality to shed light on our knowledge of the external world.

  • Using artificial intelligence to shed light on the human mind, or maybe even using smartphones to shed light on the relationship between the mind and the body.

  • When you say using, you don't mean literally using your phone to do the philosophy.

  • You mean using it as an example.
