  • We all have transformative experiences, she says, and they have enormous philosophical significance.

  • It's a joy to be here.

  • So the topic we're going to focus on today is transformative experience.

  • I think I know what experience is, but what is the transformative bit here?

  • Okay, so there are a couple of senses of transformative experience.

  • There's an ordinary, familiar sense where people think, wow, it's kind of a life changing experience.

  • And the way that I use transformative experience and develop the concept of transformative experience, it includes this, but it's something a little bit more.

  • The idea is that it's an experience that first you have to have in order to know what it's going to be like, and then second, it's life changing.

  • So overall, it's a dramatically new kind of experience that sort of revises or reconfigures who you are and in that sense, changes your life and changes the nature of yourself.
