19 分钟In November, a sixth set of human remains was found in Lake Mead and a Texas woman got confirmation that the 5th body found this year belonged to her father, who drowned in the lake 20 years ago. These discoveries come in the wake of water levels reaching their lowest point since the reservoir was being filled in 1937. Officials have yet to identify the victims, but that isn’t stopping Las Vegas from buzzing with speculation, curiosity… and tactless billboards. Given our infamous history with organized crime, it’s no surprise that people have been bursting with theories about their connection to the mob.
I have been told stories of old Vegas when the mob ran the city, and loyalty got you comped rooms and meals and disloyalty earned you a bullet.
No doubt y'all have heard the news about human bodies found in Lake Mead.
It's a more frequent thing now because the water levels are decreasing.
Is there a connection between the human remains and what remains of our Vegas mob legacy?
Today on city cast Las Vegas, we're going to try to answer that question with Jeff Schumacher.
Jeff is the vice president of exhibits and programs for the mob museum.
Let's get into it.
What did you have for breakfast, Jeff?
Well, I had some eggs and sausage and biscuits.
Breakfast of champions.
Good morning.
Jeff Schumacher, thank you for being on city cast Las Vegas.
Thank you very much for having me.
Of course.
So we called you in because you work at the mob museum and you've been there for eight years, you said, so the water levels in Lake Mead have been dropping, and as they drop, we are seeing human remains.
I want to know why every time this happens, people automatically say, it must be the mob.
Well, you know, I think that this really started with the first body that was found.
The first body was found in a barrel.
And the police determined pretty early on that this individual in the barrel had been shot in the head, and that they believed that this had occurred sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
And they did that based on the clothing that was still attached to the remains.
