You're listening to a special bonus series of the your own backyard podcast titled people versus Flores, a weekly recap of the murder trial of Paul and Ruben Flores.
Since filming and audio recording aren't currently allowed inside the courtroom, these episodes will recount handwritten notes taken by host Chris Lambert, breaking from our typical documentary format in an effort to get updates out as regularly and succinctly as possible.
These recaps will likely contain subject matter that may be graphic and disturbing to some listeners.
Listener discretion is advised.
Monday, August's first proceeding began with an absent juror on Reuben Flores's jury, who had to be replaced with an alternate.
No reason was given for the absence 17 of Rubin's 20 total jurors and alternates remain.
Deputy DA Christopher Peuvrell called JT Camp, a chief investigator for the San Luis Obispo district attorney's office, as his first witness.
JT was a Cal Poly student from 1991 to 1995 and lived in both the Sequoia and Fremont red brick dorms on campus.
He testified that the layout of the red brick dorms has remained virtually the same since he left in 1995, with a slight uphill grade as the buildings back up to the base of a mountain sometimes called Polly Hill.
In 2021, Camp visited the house at 135 Crandall Way, the site of the May 24 party, and took photos of the front yard, backyard and interior of the house.
In particular.
He pointed out a path along the side of the house that leads from the backyard to the front yard between a wall and a neighbor's fence.
At the red brick dorms, he pointed out a small access road that leads to the back of Santa Lucia hall into a small parking lot that faces the back windows.
Camp also marked the sites of Paul's room and Kristen's room on an aerial map, illustrating for the jury that Paul's room in Santa Lucia was at the furthest north end of the building, while Kristen's room in Muir hall, which sits south of Santa Lucia, was at the furthest south end of that building.
Camp also pointed out that when he was a Cal poly student, the side doors of the red bricks could be accessed with his dorm key, even late at night.
Kristen's room was the first room in the south end of Muir hall, and entering through that side door would be the most direct entrance to her room for clarification.
When I say the south end, I should point out that the red brick dorms are canted at an angle towards grand and perimeter road, so the south end is technically southeast, while Paul's dorm is technically in the northwest corner of Santa Lucia.
On cross examination, Sanger said that part of Camp's job as a DA investigator is to exonerate people, and he asked Camp what steps he took to exonerate Paul Flores.
Camp pointed out that he didn't start working on the case until 2021, but in doing so, he reviewed the reports of prior investigating agencies and was unable to find anything that would exonerate Paul.
Sanger also accused Camp of not investigating other suspects and taking the photos on Crandall way with the intention of helping the prosecution tell Tim's story.
