Chris recaps the weeks of September 12th and September 19th from the Salinas Courthouse

  • You're listening to a special bonus series of the your own backyard podcast titled people versus Flores, a weekly recap of the murder trial of Paul and Ruben Flores.

  • Since filming and audio recording aren't currently allowed inside the courtroom, these episodes will recount handwritten notes taken by host Chris Lambert, breaking from our typical documentary format in an effort to get updates out as regularly and succinctly as possible.

  • These recaps will likely contain subject matter that may be graphic and disturbing to some listeners.

  • Listener discretion is advised.

  • On Monday, September 12, defense attorney Robert Sanger resumed his cross examination of Jennifer.

  • At the end of week eight, Sanger had asked Jennifer whether her former roommate Justin had sent a Facebook message to her in 2019, telling her to, quote, make the best possible showing so that he and Mister Lambert could get the reward.

  • Jennifer said no and called Sanger's suggestion offensive.

  • When he attempted to locate screenshots of their Facebook messages, he couldnt find the exhibit he was looking for, and court ended early to give him time to request them from the custodian of records.

  • When the cross exam resumed on Monday morning, Sanger had been provided with all of the screenshots, but this exchange about the reward was never mentioned again.

  • Jennifer and Justins correspondence apparently began on October 29, 2019, the day after episode five of the your own backyard podcast aired.

  • A tip submitted back in 2004, Justin's Facebook message to Jennifer read, it's been a minute since we talked, but do you remember us talking about Paul Flores?

  • Some dude in Orkut is doing a podcast about Kristen smart and talking about Paul's old house in wasna being a possible lead.

  • I wont use your name without your permission, but can you please call me?

  • Jennifer confirmed that she did call Justin Sanger, then turned his focus back to the night when Jennifer and Justin first spoke about her alleged encounter with Paul Flores.

  • At the time you had the conversation with him in 2002, you were drinking a fifth the whiskey a day, correct?

  • Deputy District Attorney Christopher Pavrell objected that the question was irrelevant, and Judge O'Keefe sustained the objection.

  • Sanger followed.

  • Do you recall telling Detective Cole that at the time you were.

  • He paused, staring at Judge O'Keefe for a long time before shrugging.

  • I'll just say it, drinking a fifth of whiskey a day.
