What starts with a mysterious gun in an airport bathroom and a fake refugee identity opens the door to a nationwide network of far-right extremists inside Germany’s military and police. It’s a story about a changing national identity — and the backlash against it — raising a question that democracies across the world are waking up to: What happens when the threat is coming from within?
I was informed by the federal criminal police office they had found a diary of a soldier in the Bundeswehr.
And there was a list of names, and this was so called enemy list, enemies to be killed.
And therefore there are many, many questions.
Prosecutors say that they foiled a major terror plot that's rocked the german military.
Subsequent investigations have uncovered further cases of far right extremism.
Soldiers at several barracks were caught with world War two german army memorabilia.
They have looked into almost 300 soldiers with possible neo nazi views.
The arrest has raised concerns of a right wing terrace within the german armed forces.
They were very simply planning to trigger Day X, the day when chaos, terrorism, and anarchy will take over and eradicate democracy.
Day X for us was the day where there's some kind of attack, and it would lead to the breakdown of public order.
The most relevant danger right now comes from the very far right.
The constitution is in danger because these people kill.
People from the police department told me, there is a guy who wanted to kill you, but don't be afraid.
These neo Nazis, you know we got them.
Of course I'm concerned and I'm afraid, oh, you better get goosebumps, because we have to take that serious.
We uncovered enemies of our constitution.
Among those who swore to protect this constitution, I'm Catrin Benhold, coming soon from the New York Times.
Day x.
You will murder me.
I will murder you first.
