  • From recorded Future News, I'm Dena Temple west, and this is click here.

  • Sara Wahidi was coming home from work in the spring of 2018, walking to her apartment in a relatively peaceful, leafy part of north Kabul.

  • And just as she was approaching her building, she had an eerie sense of air rushing past.

  • And then just a split second later, there was a blast.

  • People were panicking, running.

  • And maybe about 30 seconds after that, it was just this huge light behind me.

  • Shockwaves followed, and she ran for cover.

  • This was a time in Afghanistan when violence was only just beginning to bubble up, erupting in the least expected places, including, it appeared, in Sarah's upper crust neighborhood.

  • We didn't know what was happening.

  • And I'm watching people in the street, you know, running, screaming, helping each other and feeling helpless.

  • It was like a movie.

  • I mean, you saw the insurgents on the roof of this building, and then you saw the Afghan National Police or army on the other side.

  • And it was just a horrific incident to watch.

  • And then in the midst of the chaos, her cell phone began pinging.

  • It was a text from a friend of hers at the US embassy.

  • Hey, Sarah, I remember that you lived in this building.

  • You know, do you know that there was this explosion, and they're saying that it's ISIS.

  • Just wanted to make sure that you're safe.

  • And Sarah thought to herself, wait, how does she have all this detail when I'm right here?

  • I was astounded by how quickly she had that information.
