In the summer of 2018, this unusual call came into the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office.
A man rang up to say that $10,000 had disappeared from his cryptocurrency account just overnight.
When he reported it to the sheriff's department, they weren't sure what to do with it.
That's Erin west.
She's a deputy district attorney in Santa Clara county and part of a team there known as React.
They specialize in high tech crime.
We get interesting, different things referred to us that people have not yet developed a skill set to investigate.
And this man who called hadn't just had money drained from his crypto account, other unexplained things were happening, too.
He had lost access to a number of different platforms and his phone service.
That 1st $10,000 case, it turns out, was just the beginning.
Within weeks, Erin and the react team were flooded with calls.
But it wasn't just people saying they'd lost tens of thousands of dollars anymore.
The numbers kept climbing.
This was a phenomenon.
It was something that we had never seen before.
$765,000 case, $1.8 million case, $1.2 million case.
And then that September, the biggest heist yet, $14 million.
It was a jaw dropper.
