In an acceptance speech in June after voters gave him a third consecutive term as prime minister of India.
The last person to do that in India was Nehru, one of the nations founding fathers.
Modi's win wasn't exactly a surprise.
It was expected, so expected, in fact, that Modi predicted that he would not only win a rare third term, but also get a super majority in parliament that would allow him to reshape India.
Instead, his party, known as the BJP, failed to win a simple majority.
Indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term in office.
But hundreds of millions of eligible voters handed his party and its allies a substantially reduced mandate.
The country has unanimously and clearly stated.
We do not want Mister Narendra Modi and mister Amit Shah to be involved.
In the running of this country.
The BJP has won 240 seats as of now.
So the BJP is 32 seats short.
Now Modi will have to preside over a coalition government.
