Hello and welcome to News R from the BBC World Service.
Coming to you live from our studios in central London, I'm Julian Marshall.
The assassination on September 27 of the Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut has taken the conflict between Israel and the iranian backed militant group to a dangerous new level.
This past week has seen Israel launch a ground invasion into southern Lebanon and begin a wave of airstrikes in the south and on targets in the capital, Beirut, while Iran launched a large scale ballistic missile attack on Israel in revenge for the killing of Nasrallah in a heightening cycle of retaliation.
In the course of the program, with developments moving at a bewildering speed, we'll be looking at how the conflict in Lebanon is deepening and its growing humanitarian consequences, finding out how Israel seems to be opening up a new front in the occupied West bank and as Iran braces for an israeli military response, exploring two competing visions for the region from Israel and the arab world, Israel seems to have an ever expanding list of what it says are Hezbollah linked targets as it continues its ground and air offensive in southern Lebanon and aerial assault on Beirut.
President Biden, speaking to the media of the White House just a short time ago, said Israel had the right to defend itself but needed to avoid civilian casualties.
