Yahya Sinwar, who topped Israel's most-wanted list, was a key figure believed to have been behind the 7 October attacks. The Israeli Defence Force tells us how the operation was carried out. Also in the programme: With new questions about the likelihood of a hostage deal, we speak to one man whose brother-in-law is still being held captive; and a Palestinian journalist tells us about the mood in Gaza after Sinwar's killing. • Hello and welcome to News Hour, live from the BBC World Service in London.

  • Hello, London, I'm Rebecca Kesby.

  • There is really only one story for the program today, and that is the killing of the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar.

  • His death is being described as a seismic blow to Hamas, the group considered by many western states as well as Israel as a terror organization responsible for the murderous attacks on israeli citizens on October 7 last year that sparked the conflict in Gaza.

  • Sinwa himself is widely accepted as the master mastermind of that plan.

  • Since that moment last year, the israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has promised to eradicate Hamas.
