  • Can he prepare the country for the first democratic election in decades?

  • Plus, China shows off its military might at the biannual air show.

  • We'll have a roundup of business news and a flick through the papers.

  • That's all ahead here on the Globalist live from London.

  • First, a look at what else is happening in the news.

  • Voters in Somaliland head to the polls today to choose a president at a time when the breakaway Somali region sees international recognition within reach after three decades of de facto self rule.

  • US President elect Donald Trump has named Elon Musk to a role aimed at creating a more efficient government, handing even more influence to the world's richest man who donated millions of dollars to help Trump get elected.

  • And the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the spiritual leader of Anglicans worldwide, resigned in sorrow yesterday, saying he'd failed to ensure a proper investigation into allegations of abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps decades ago.

  • Do stay tuned to Monocle Radio throughout the day for more on those stories.

  • Now.

  • The Joint Arab League, an organization of Islamic cooperation, the OIC summit hosted by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed in Riyadh, released a step on Monday demanding that Israel immediately stop its military aggression in Gaza and Lebanon.

  • The 57 member OIC and 22 member Arab League include countries that recognize Israel and those firmly opposed to its regional integration.

  • Well, I'm joined now by Greg Karlstrom, Middle east correspondent and author of How Long Will Israel Survive the Threat from Within?
