You're listening to the Briefing, first broadcast on the 26th of November, 2024 on Monocle Radio.
Hello and welcome to the Briefing, broadcasting live from our studios here at Midori House in London.
I'm Chris Chermack.
Coming up on today's program, Israel strikes Beirut even as a ceasefire with Hezbollah appears imminent.
We'll have the latest.
After that, we explore the least surprising element of Donald Trump's program, an announcement of tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada.
We'll also look at a NATO cybersecurity conference in London.
And then Taiwan celebrates its baseball team taking home a first major medal.
And and finally, we'll look at the famous or should that be infamous track, do they know it's Christmas 40 years later?
All that right here on the Briefing with me, Chris Turmac.
It is not yet fully official, but it is the closest we've been in months.
Israel and Hezbollah are nearing terms on a 60 day cease fire that would see both sides withdraw from southern Lebanon.
It should be said that the deal is entirely separate from stopping the fighting in Gaza, which has been the far more devastating of the two conflicts and which even Hezbollah had initially set as a condition for ending its own war with Israel.
Well, I'm joined now by Leila Melana, Allen Monaco's Middle east correspondent.
Leila, great to have you on the show.
First of all, before we get to this ceasefire, perhaps catch us up on what's been happening on the ground in the last 24 hours or so, because Israel has struck southern Beirut once again.
It has, even as we've been seeing the chances, really the best chances of a ceasefire that we've seen since the beginning of the step up in this conflict at the end of September.
Israel has redoubled its efforts in the suburbs of Beirut over the weekend.
One of its deadliest attacks on some buildings in the suburbs, 29 people were killed, nearly 100 injured.
We've also seen heavy strikes in the last 24 hours as well.
