  • This edition of Monocle on Saturday was first broadcast on the 16th of November, 2024.

  • Hello, I'm Georgina Godwin broadcasting to you live from Midori House in London.

  • This is Monocle on site.

  • Coming up on today's program, we look through the week's news and culture with the founder of China Dialogue and current chair of the judges of the Bailey Gifford Prize for nonfiction.

  • That's Isabel Hilton.

  • Then I believe it's important in itself to promote a book design culture that's experimental, that is, you know, creative.

  • Because in itself, a book is not just knowledge, it's a cultural product.

  • We'll hear from the publisher behind the most beautiful book in the world, the Danish architectural press.

  • Plus, we'll find out why British readers are continuing their love affair with Japanese books.

  • That's all ahead here on Monocle on Saturday with me, Georgina Godwin.

  • First, though, here's the news.

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a week long diplomatic blitz of South America.

  • He's inaugurated a massive deepwater port in Peru, a $1.3 billion investment by Beij as it seeks to expand trade and influence on the continent.

  • US President Joe Biden met with Japanese and South Korean leaders on Friday as they sought to cement their diplomatic progress ahead of a new Trump administration that many fear could upend alliances worldwide.

  • A Southwest Airlines plane preparing for departure at Dallas Love Field Airport in the US Was struck by a bullet late on Friday, prompting the aircraft to return to the gate, the airline said in a statement.

  • Passengers were safely deplaned.

  • And the largest coral ever recorded has been discovered.

  • And it's so big it can be seen from space.

  • It was found by a National Geographic team conducting an expedition in the Solomon Islands to study ocean health.

  • A statement said it was like finding the world's tallest tree.
