  • One spring day in the mid-70s, a screenwriter named Derek Washburn had a strange encounter in the woods.

  • At the time, Washburn was kicking around ideas for a movie about Vietnam.

  • I had a huge feeling about wanting to do something about lower middle class people because the war was going to be fought by these people.

  • Washburn had been developing the story for a while now, working with a young eccentric writer director named Michael Cimino, but they hadn't yet figured out who their main characters would be.

  • So Washburn decided to take a weekend trip to a property he owned in rural Massachusetts.

  • He was clearing out brush when suddenly Washburn realized he wasn't alone.
