The results of the Indian general election were met with surprise the world over. Despite doing enough to secure an historic third term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now rely on coalition partners in order to govern, after his BJP party failed to retain an outright majority. So what went wrong in a campaign widely expected to be a coronation, and why did analysts fail to predict a resurgence among opposition parties? Caitríona Perry is joined by our South Asia regional editor Anbarasan Ethirajan, and BBC presenter Devina Gupta to discuss how this result could alter India’s political landscape.
