单集文稿 ...

  • The Dog days of summer are not just a lazy, hazy stint in August when canines like to sleep.

  • This period takes its name from the heliacal rising of the star Sirius, also known as the Dog Star or simply the Scorcher.

  • It's a system that's long captivated astronomers as it's the brightest star in the sky.

  • The ancient Greeks knew it as the Canis Majoris and took it to signal the beginning of the hot days of the season, but also drought, lethargy and madness, and a change of existential mood.

  • In our busy yearly modern cycle, it is still a point of difference.

  • And I ask myself, is this the only time of year when we feel it's okay to lull back and embrace the spirit of summer escapism?

  • While this episode of Conflict Corner takes its cue from the Dog Star somewhat, we'll dive into the heady heat of summer and those moments of blissful escondent that this month brings to so many.

  • We'll journey to the remote island of Tinos to find out about its cuisine.

  • We'll meet an entrepreneur who has distilled some of the great sensual storytellers, from Aeneas Nin to Catherine Millet, into perfumery.

  • And we'll cast off to the Turku archipelago in Finland, where summers are spent eating crayfish and taking midnight dips in the cool sea, straight from the hot sauna.

  • And finally, we'll reflect on the aesthetics of summer tennis in a sumptuous audio essay by Robert Bound.

  • This is Confect Corner and I'm your host, Sophie Grove.

  • Simam means close, like come and sit near me or closer to me in a small table like here.

  • We usually do.

  • We have Mezet, these small plates that we share.

  • After I spend a lot of time reading, feel a bit separated from my body and not really connected.

  • Whereas what perfume does for me is whenever I experience them, it really instantaneously bring me back to my body and it conjures up like a world which is very expansive and very emotional, which is what literature tried to achieve as well.

  • Tennis is summer scent and sensibility.

  • Heat haze, sweet sweat, the sultry and imprecise promise.

  • A question hanging the warm air.
