  • Hello, this is Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today is an Australian journalist specializing in travel and tourism.

  • She fell into her career quite literally.

  • She's a regular contributor to a wide range of print and online publications including holding the role of Queensland expert travel writer for the Telegraph.

  • She's won the best travel and tourism news story category of the Australian Society of Travel Writer Awards for Excellence.

  • She was a finalist in others including Travel Book of the Year for her book A Gl Glass Half Full.

  • She's the best selling author of various works including Frommers Easy Guide to Australia, Rough Guide to Australia and countless others.

  • Her latest work released this year includes Sustainable Travel for Dummies and the publication of the academic book Rethinking Travel Writing.

  • I spoke to her earlier this year in Brisbane discussing her career and future plans.

  • Lee Milne, welcome to Meet the Writers.

  • Lee, you say that you're an accidental travel writer.

  • That's not what you set out to do.

  • So how did it happen?

  • Well, accidentally I had been a newspaper journalist.

  • I had just had a baby, my first child.

  • I was approached by somebody who was looking for a stringer, a freelance to work in Queensland, where I live, and they said memorably, you can do it, it'll be easy.

  • You can do it while the baby's asleep.

  • Didn't quite work out that way, but it was for a travel trade magazine.

  • So they weren't after what we would think of as a travel writer.
