单集文稿 ...

  • Hello, everyone.

  • Simon Parkin here, host of My Perfect Console, back with another correspondence episode.

  • It's been a few months since we did one of these, so thank you to all of you who have written in emailed with your thoughts, with your suggestions for guests, your constructive feedback and all the other things.

  • So I appreciate that.

  • Yeah, it's been a rather turbulent week for My Perfect Console, not entirely unexpectedly, but perhaps a little more than I had expected.

  • This is following the broadcast.

  • Can you use that word in podcasts?

  • I think maybe the broadcast of the Chris Dearing episode, which released earlier this week.

  • Chris, former president for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, worked alongside Ken Kutaragi to launch the first PlayStation and the PlayStation 2.

  • Chris is retired now and graciously agreed to come on the podcast and we had a long chat, predominantly about PlayStation history, about Chris's own journey from growing up in Boston to getting his MBA from Harvard Business School, working for Gillette and then joining Sony, where he worked for the remainder of his career, or the main part of his career, at least.

  • At the end of that conversation, I asked Chris kind of a throwaway question, but one that I had planned to ask him, I will admit that, about the recent layoffs in the video game industry.

  • In the last 18 months, I think there's been 22,000 layoffs across the video game industry, including a significant number of jobs at Sony PlayStation as well.

  • The Sony London was greatly affected.

  • So I thought it would just be interesting to see Chris's perspective as a someone at the executive level.

  • And of course, because he no longer works for these companies, I thought maybe he would be able to speak more frankly and openly than we often do hear from C Suite executives.

  • And that was indeed the case.

  • Chris, I guess, was comfortable in the conversation.

  • He gave his perspective.

  • I think in the end roundup of that episode, I kind of said that I felt that he was just sort of trying to say the industry is cyclical, there are times of plenty, there are times of hardship.

  • You kind of have to take the rough with the smooth.
