A slightly different episode this week.
Last month we received the sad news that Brett Jones, the influential artist on classic rare titles such as GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, had died.
I read the news on Facebook.
Brett's friend and colleague who also worked on GoldenEye, David Doak, posted this rather sad news.
I interviewed Brett in 2022 for a Guardian article all about the making of GoldenEye 007, just one of the most influential video games ever, really.
The seminal Nintendo 64 game based on the James Bond movie of the same title.
I spoke to several developers on that game, including David and the game's director, Martin Hollis, and Brett was one of the people who Martin suggested that I also speak to.
And we had a half hour conversation about how Brett had come to work on the game, Join Rare, and then all of the other things that Brett went on to do.
After.
Brett had a relatively short career in the games industry, he worked of course on GoldenEye 7, but also on Perfect Dark, and helped shape the design of the that game's protagonist, Joanna Dark.
Brett voiced several characters in the that N64 game, but then also went on to work in the VFX industry, worked on movies such as the Last Jedi, TV shows including Doctor who, and Brett also helped create the opening titles for BBC's Match of the Day and Championship Darts.
So, quite an eclectic career.
Anyhow, when I heard the news about Brett's passing, I remembered that we'd spoken together and just went into sort of my files to see if I happened to still have a recording of our conversation.
And I was pleased to find that I did.
Now, of course, this, this interview was.
Was recorded for.
For a piece of written journalism.
It wasn't ever intended to be broadcast and the sound quality is just, you know, what you got on Zoom.
We spoke over Zoom and I just recorded it into my phone.
