Donald Trump has given the world an insight into what the economic vision for his second term might be, and it can be summarised in what he calls the “most beautiful word": tariffs. The president-elect says he will introduce 25% tariffs on goods coming from Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency, and add an extra 10% on goods coming from China. Mexico and China have baulked at Trump's proposals, but are they a disguised bargaining chip on drugs and border policy? Justin, Marianna and Anthony convene to discuss, and are joined by a former senior economist at the White House during the Bush and Obama administrations to sort the fact from the fiction. Anthony, are you the last person left in Washington, D.C.
today?
I'm one of the few here in the bureau.
I also had a very smooth, easy commute in from my home in Arlington, Virginia.
Yeah, I think the city is emptied out.
And why would that be?
Well, that's because Thanksgiving's tomorrow.
This is a big travel time.
Everyone goes all over the country to see family, spend time with family, have a big thing.
Thanksgiving dinner.
This is one of the major traditional holidays in the United States.
