Joe Biden has promised a peaceful transition of power after Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. He's also called on Americans to "turn down the temperature" after a fractious campaign that has divided voters. Will public figures who have been openly critical of Donald Trump feel safe when he takes office again? And, a listener challenges whether Americast and other parts of the media really foresaw Donald Trump's return to the White House as a genuine possibility. Marianna explains his appeal to the "manosphere" which exists outside of traditional media. BBC Sounds Music Radio Podcasts hello, I'm in D.C.
and earlier I was on the radio chatting to Matt Chorley and answering lots of your questions about the presidential election.
But before we hear that, I want to talk a little bit about Joe Biden's speech today.
It's the first time that he's spoken since the election happened, since Donald Trump won, and this is what he had to say.
The will of the people always prevails.
Yesterday, I spoke with President Elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory.
And I assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition.
That's what the American people deserve.
The speech was short.
It was seven minutes long.
And he praised his vice president, Kamala Harris.
He said her campaign was inspiring and he urged Americans to have faith in democracy.
I also hope we can later rest a question about the integrity of the American electoral system.
It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent, and it can be trusted, win or lose.
He also said it was time to lower the temperature.
And that chimes with some of the conversations I've been having here out in the United States.
