  • Hello, I'm Pippa from BBC Learning English, and in this series we're finding out what makes a good leader and learning some useful vocabulary to use at work.

  • Today, our leader is Sophia Chiani.

  • Sophia is the founder of Climate Cardinals, which shares climate information around the world in over 100 languages.

  • Sofia came up with the idea for the organisation as a teenager when she visited relatives in Iran, noticed the pollution in their area, and realised her family had very little information about climate change in their own language.

  • So what does leadership mean to Sophia?

  • Leadership to me is giving people broad, overarching advice, but then leaning on them to get things done, Sophia says.

  • Leadership is about leaning on people to get things done.

  • We can lean on someone for support.

  • The phrase can also be used to mean put pressure on someone.

  • We might lean on politicians to help make change, but Sophia means it in the supportive way.

  • And Sophia has been inspired by other leaders who want more action to tackle climate change.

  • I really admire Mary Robinson.

  • I was on a panel with her and was really inspired by the work that she's done to bring climate justice to the forefront of discussions, as well as to really champion intergenerational dialogue.

  • What are Sophia's top tips for leaders of the future?

  • I think that the most effective leaders are the ones who work with their team to get things done and who listen to their team when they give them advice.

  • I think so much of what I've done is really learning how to work with others instead of how to delegate responsibilities to others.

  • Because by leaning on my team and by developing collaboratively with them, I think I've been able to be much more productive and also prevent from personal burnout.

  • Burnout is what we call being completely tired out by work, and it's usually caused by high levels of stress or too much work.

  • Sophia says she's learned to delegate, to give some tasks to other people so that she can be a better leader.

  • So what should leaders not do?
