单集文稿 ...

  • Hey, everybody.

  • Welcome to another phrasal verb episode.

  • I hope you're doing great, and I hope you're ready to learn a couple new phrasal verbs in English.

  • The first one we're going to look at is bank on, and the other one is bargain for.

  • So what does bank on mean?

  • This means to base your hopes on something or to rely on it.

  • For example, I could say I'm banking on his help because I don't know how to do it.

  • In this sentence, I'm saying that I am relying on his help.

  • I'm hoping that his help will be sufficient, will be enough, because I don't know how to do it.

  • So I'm basing my hopes on him on his help.

  • Okay?

  • The other phrasal verb that I want to look at today is bargain for.

  • So bargain for means that you expect something to happen or you are prepared for that thing to happen.

  • And you'll usually hear this phrasal verb used in this way.

  • Listen to this sentence.

  • We had more issues than we had bargained for.

  • So you'll normally hear people say this to say that they didn't expect something to happen or something to be so hard or so challenging, or for there to be so much of something, or whatever.

  • You'll often hear people say, more than I bargained for, more than he had bargained for, etc.

  • So in this sentence, we had more issues than we had bargained for.

  • I'm saying that we had more issues than we had expected to have, than we were prepared to have.
