An unexpected phone call turns Matthew Heawood’s attention to a mystery in the gloom of Rendlesham Forest; folklore, paranormal, otherworldly? Up for debate, but fertile ground for a new investigative podcast, that’s for sure. One question still lingers, will our host be re-joined by his roaming researcher, Kennedy Fisher? The duo’s last update patched together frantic updates from Baghdad, as they pursued suspected occultists in The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Very little hope lingered of solving the mystery, and maybe even less that Kennedy would return home safe… But for now, a new investigation calls. Following the success of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Radio 4 commissions a return to this HP Lovecraft-inspired universe. Once again, the podcast embraces Lovecraft’s crypt of horror, braving the Sci-Fi stylings of The Whisperer in Darkness. Episode One Henry Akeley, an ex-student from Dr Eleanor Peck’s folklore and witchcraft course, has gone missing, and Heawood and Kennedy decide whether or not to investigate. But first, there are threads to tie up from their last mystery podcast 'The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward.' Before you listen to this BBC podcast, I'd like to tell you about something else you might enjoy.
My name's Alison Hindl, and I commission audio drama and fiction for the BBC.
It's a great privilege because I get to unearth stories people love.
You should see the books and scripts covering my floor from new talent and established writers as well as classics.
The BBC has such a rich history of making great audio drama, we're still the largest producer in the world, and the popularity of podcasts means we can share what we do with even more people.
So if you like to lose yourself in a gripping audio drama or book, find your next listen on BBC sounds.
Hi, you're through to the offices of the Mystery Machine podcast.
We're taking a break for the moment, but we'll be checking messages, so please speak after the tone.
Hey, it's me.
Sorry to take off without, you know, weird times.
Anyway, Ezra and I are in Baghdad.
I know, right?
But we've tracked down Melody Cartwright.
She's here with Barbara Sayers and some other guy who's all covered in bandages.
We've been watching them for a couple of days and they've mostly stayed inside their hotel.
But this morning they headed out in the pickup with all their luggage and a local guide.
We think they're headed up to Mosul, to the ruins of Nineveh.
We're going to go out after them, but I need you to get me some recording equipment couriered out to Mosul because my machine just gave up the ghost and I can't find anything reliable here.
Call me back on this number as soon as you get this.
I'm running out to meet a guide.
