单集简介 ...

The witch has held a place firmly in our imagination for centuries – from whispered warnings in folklore to pop-culture driven heights. But what does it mean to be a witch now? Presenter India Rakusen, creator of the podcast 28ish Days Later, is on a journey to find out. In this episode, we're investigating what made older women a key target during the witch hunts in many places in Europe. India wants to find out why that was, and how this has subsequently shaped life for older women several hundred years later. We meet modern witches who show us how covens help to break down ageism. • BBC Sounds Music Radio Podcasts I'm India Rackerson and you're listening to Witch from BBC Radio 4, a series exploring and probing this shape shifting word.

  • And something that I've found along the way so far is that when you start examining the word witch, it's not long before another word comes knocking at the door.

  • Episode 8 Hag.

  • Excuse me.

  • We're in the village of Torreburn in Fife, Scotland.

  • A bit further down that way.

  • Yeah, but the tides under the water.

  • Lucy and I are searching for the grave of somebody who was cast out as a witch and left to lie forever in a watery liminal space.

  • Usually a little bit further out.

  • Oh, amazing.

  • Thank you so very much.

  • Okay, so that guy's just stuck a stick where he thinks roughly, the grave is where people gather.

  • I wonder if many people come here because I, I asked that guy where he thought it was.

  • I said, the grave of Lilius Ad.

  • And he said, what, the witch thing?

  • And oh, here it is.

  • But yeah, I wonder how many people stand here and think that here lies a witch.

  • Right, right.

  • Rather than here lies a miscarriage of justice.
