  • This is in conversation from Apple News.

  • I'm Shemitah Basu.

  • Today endearing advice for this year's graduating class and for non graduates too.

  • Class of 2023, take a deep breath.

  • And drink some water.

  • Cause you are now a graduate.

  • It's time to live boldly, courageous and unapologetically.

  • Get to work.

  • I wish you all the luck today, tomorrow, and all the precious days of your life.

  • Thank you.

  • The commencement speech has been a staple of graduation ceremonies for well over 100 years.

  • And while sometimes these speeches fall short, you know, too boring, too long, too not at all about the graduates.

  • Every year, there are a handful of speeches that are truly great that stick with not just the graduating class, but but with all of us who listen to them.

  • So we're turning to someone who's listened to hundreds of speeches over the years.

  • Christina Negrut is the creator of the website bestgraduationspeeches.com.

  • that's where she's collected the greatest commencement addresses and picked apart the patterns to find what makes a good speech that stands the test of time.

  • There are many attributes that would make a good commencement speech, but I boiled it down to two attributes.

  • So I was interested in commencement speeches that are entertaining and inspirational.

  • Cristina grew up in Romania, where speeches were not part of graduation ceremonies.

  • So when she moved to the US for graduate school and was especially thinking about her young kids and what kind of advice she wanted them to carry through life, she began this process of cataloging and analyzing memorable speeches.
