单集简介 ...

The suspect is a doctor from Saudi Arabia, living in Germany since 2006. We hear from a local member of the state parliament and a counter-extremism expert in Berlin. Also on the programme: Both houses of the US Congress have voted in favour of a short-term spending bill to avert a government shutdown; and the wonders of swimming mice, dwarf squirrels, and blob-headed fish. • Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.

  • Coming live from London, this is Owen Bennett Jones.

  • And coming up in a minute, we'll be heading to Germany, where a car has been driven at people enjoying a Christmas market in the city of Magdeburg.

  • Also today, the US Congress has voted to avoid a government shutdown.

  • What has that told us about President Elect Trump's relationship with Republicans on Capitol Hill and how the civil war in Syria affected musicians there?

  • It seemed that any lyrics I would write, they don't express what really happened.

  • No words can express what really happening back then.

  • So all those involved in music are wondering what the new authorities in Damascus will allow them to do.

  • We'll take a look at that.

  • But first we're going to Magdaba in eastern Germany, where people had gathered at one of those traditional Christmas markets where there are little huts laid out selling fine food and glue, vine and Christmas decoration and gifts.

  • Not for the first time, one of these markets became a target for a vehicle used as a weapon.

  • Shortly after the attack, police detained the driver of the car and here's the moment they arrested him.

  • Lars Fruhotmuller from the local public broadcaster MDR told the BBC what he'd seen.

  • Everywhere were ambulances, there were police, there were a lot of fireworkers.
