I'm Georgina Godwin.
My guest today is an American director and writer of theatre, opera and film.
Her most famous work is the stage adaptation of Disney's the Lion King, which debuted in July 1997.
It secured 11 Tony Award nominations during its debut year, winning best direction and costume design.
It's Broadway's third longest running show in history and the highest grossing Broadway production of all time.
It's made more than $1.9 billion so far.
Her 2002 film Frida, about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, was nominated for five Academy Awards.
She also directed the 2007 jukebox musical film across the Universe, based on the music of the Beatles.
She's done so much more.
She's going to tell us all about it.
Julie Taymor, welcome to Meet the Writer.
There are so many ways in which to describe you.
You direct, you write, you sculpt, you screenwrite.
And I think possibly, Julie, the best thing to say is that you're a storyteller.
Would you agree?
Sometimes I would say I'm a playmaker, as opposed to a playwright or a director, because it's the whole thing.
So a playmaker would also mean the storytelling because it's all part and parcel of the whole thing.
So, yes, I'm a storyteller.
Where did that all start for you?
