  • Hello, this is Meet the Writers.

  • I'm Georgina Godwin.

  • My guest today is an American director and writer of theatre, opera and film.

  • Her most famous work is the stage adaptation of Disney's the Lion King, which debuted in July 1997.

  • It secured 11 Tony Award nominations during its debut year, winning best direction and costume design.

  • It's Broadway's third longest running show in history and the highest grossing Broadway production of all time.

  • It's made more than $1.9 billion so far.

  • Her 2002 film Frida, about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, was nominated for five Academy Awards.

  • She also directed the 2007 jukebox musical film across the Universe, based on the music of the Beatles.

  • She's done so much more.

  • She's going to tell us all about it.

  • Julie Taymor, welcome to Meet the Writer.

  • There are so many ways in which to describe you.

  • You direct, you write, you sculpt, you screenwrite.

  • And I think possibly, Julie, the best thing to say is that you're a storyteller.

  • Would you agree?

  • Sometimes I would say I'm a playmaker, as opposed to a playwright or a director, because it's the whole thing.

  • So a playmaker would also mean the storytelling because it's all part and parcel of the whole thing.

  • So, yes, I'm a storyteller.

  • Where did that all start for you?
