Germany's far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has held a rally near the site of the attack on the Christmas market on Friday evening - we'll speak to one of the party's members of parliament. Also on the programme: President Biden has commuted the death sentences on all but three of the federal prisoners on death row; and we'll look at the history and politics of the Panama Canal as Donald Trump threatens to re-assert control over it. Hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.
I'm Paul Henley.
The programme is coming to you live from London.
Germany's far right AfD has held a march in the eastern city of Magdeburg, saying it was mourning the victims of an attack on a Christmas market.
A driver speeding a rented vehicle through thick crowds has newly inflamed a heated debate on migrant and security policy.
The German government has faced angry questions about the Saudi suspect who was arrested at the scene of Friday's attack.
Five people were killed, over 200 wounded.
Those questions were fueled by news that Saudi Arabia had warned Germany about its citizen, Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, who came to Germany in 2006 and was granted refugee status 10 years later.
The BBC's Bethany Bell has been at the march in Magdeburg.
We'll hear from an AFD official shortly.
First, Bethany, on today's rally, it was.
A rally by the AfD.
It was in front of the cathedral in the same place that where hundreds of people gathered on Saturday to watch a church service.
But today it was political.
