This edition of Monocle on Saturday was first broadcast on 28 December 2024 on Monocle Radio.
Hello, I'm Georgina Godwin broadcasting to you live from Midori House in London.
This is Monocle Saturday.
Coming up on today's program, we'll have a look through the week's news and culture with the author and political journalist Teres d'Astiny.
What do you have for us, Terry?
Well, we'll look at how Elon Musk has been falling out with his fellow Trump supporters over immigration about prisoners of war in Ukraine and what Europe is trying to do to crack down on too many Airbnbs.
Excellent.
We'll be back with Terry in a moment's time.
We're also going to hear from Cherise Morris, who's winner of the Global Black Women's Non Fiction Manuscript Prize.
It's quite a mouthful, but.
But she'll explain all.
That's all ahead here on Monocle on Saturday with me, Georgina Godwin.
First, though, here's the news.
North Korean forces are experiencing mass casualties on the front lines of Russia's war against Ukraine, with a thousand of their troops killed or wounded in the last week alone.
In Russia's Kursk region, that's according to the White House.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian troops were sending the North Koreans into battle with minimal protection and that North Koreans were taking extreme measures to avoid being taken prisoner.
Israeli forces raided the Kemal Adwan Hospital on Friday, one of three medical facilities on the northern edge of Gaza, ordering dozens of patients and hundreds of others to evacuate and leaving part of the site on fire, Health Ministry officials said.
Elsewhere in Gaza, Israeli strikes killed at least 25 people, including 15 people in a single house in Gaza City.
That's according to medics and the Civil Emergency Service.
And NATO says it will boost its presence in the Baltic Sea after the suspected sabotage this week of an undersea power cable and four Internet cables, while alliance member Estonia launched a naval operation to guard a parallel electricity link.
