  • Hello, I'm Sumi Somaskanda from the BBC World Service.

  • This is the global story.

  • For decades, the promise of the American dream has drawn people to the United States.

  • And for just as long, migration has been political.

  • Do not come.

  • Do not come.

  • And if they come back into our country, they will be told it is an automatic 10 year sentence in jail with no possibility of parole.

  • In recent elections, it's become a hot button issue.

  • Illegal immigration has made the southern border a lightning rod for fiery political debate in the US And a majority of Americans say the issue will inform how they vote.

  • But what's at stake for countries south of the US Border?

  • How might a Trump or Harris immigration policy impact their neighbors in Latin America and beyond?

  • Today we have another special pre election report looking at America's place in the world ahead of the election.

  • And with me is Bernd Debussmann who is covering the election and immigration for our digital team here in D.C.

  • and at this point, Bernie, I think it's fair to say you're a pretty familiar voice on this podcast.

  • Yeah, thanks for having me again.

  • And we also have sitting next to me here will Grant, the BBC's Mexico, Central America and Cuba correspondent who usually speaks to us from Mexico City.

  • But we're lucky to have you much.

  • Closer in D.C.

  • it's nice to see you again, Msumi.

  • Bernie, I want to start with you because immigration is a political issue in many countries.
