It's one of the big nights out in the United States celebrating New Year on the most visited road in New Orleans.
Bourbon Street, a party place and a party city turned into a nightmare in the early hours of this January 1st.
An army veteran with the flag of the group that called itself Islamic State at his side drove his pickup truck into the crowds early this morning, ploughing through pedestrians before getting out and shooting at police officers.
In the exchange of gunfire which followed, two officers were injured before the assailant himself was shot dead.
The truck was later found to contain an ied, an improvised explosive device.
The FBI is now investigating what the Bureau says was an incident of terrorism in which at least 10 people were killed and more than 35 others injured.
President Joe Biden expressed anger and frustration at the injuries and loss of life.
In a post on his Truth Social site, President elect Donald Trump called the attack an act of pure evil and appeared to suggest it was the work of criminals coming into the country.
At a news conference in New Orleans within the last couple of hours, the FBI Assistant Special Agent Althea Duncan provided details about the suspect.
The subject has been identified as 42 year old Samsud Dim Jabbar, a US born citizen from Texas.
He was driving a Ford pickup truck which appears to be rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject came in possession of this vehicle.
An ISIS flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle and the FBI is working to determine the subject's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.
Weapons and potential improvised explosive devices IEDs were located in the subject's vehicle.
Other potential IEDs also located in the French Quarter.
As of now, two IEDs have been found and rendered safe.
Althea Duncan from the FBI it says it does not think the assailant acted alone.
