单集简介 ...

Anti-corruption investigators wanted to arrest the former president for his failed attempt to impose martial law. Mr Yoon, who has been impeached, is still in the presidential compound. Supporters of the impeached president were out in force too. Some were seen waving the American flag, and carrying placards saying "stop the steal." Also on the programme, we hear about the plight of health workers from Gaza who are being detained by Israeli authorities, often without charge. And we go to Australia where debate is raging over crocodiles; just how many are too many and how should a cull work? (Picture: Supporters of President Yoon clash with police in Seoul. • This BBC podcast is supported by ads outside the UK hello and welcome to NewsHour from the BBC World Service.

  • We're coming to you live from London.

  • I'm James Menendez.

  • And we're going to begin today in South Korea, where the ongoing political crisis there took an extraordinary turn today with a standoff outside the president's residence between his special guard and and anti corruption investigators backed by the police.

  • They were there to arrest President Yoon Soon Yeol for his failed attempt last month to impose martial law in South Korea.

  • You'll remember he's already been impeached by legislators, but they weren't able to arrest him, prompting people to pour out onto the streets of the capital Seoul to express their outrage.

  • But there was also a counter demonstration out by supporters of the impeached president.

  • Some were even seen waving the American flag and carrying placards saying, stop the steel.

  • These were the views of two people we spoke to on the streets of Seoul about the current crisis.

  • While it's a season to celebrate, I feel really pessimistic that this situation has still been going on since the end of the year.

  • Moreover, as a citizen of South Korea, I believe that the president should be rapidly arrested and the appropriate procedures must be implemented to reset peace in the country.

  • Isn't the situation in the hands of the Constitutional Court?

  • When they finish making their decision, the current president will step down because he will accept it.

  • I think it's not appropriate to shamefully arrest the sitting president.

  • Well, the BBC's Gene McKenzie has been out and about all day following the twists and turns.

  • So what exactly happened at the presidential residence earlier?

  • It has been just a remarkable day.

  • We were down at the president's residence this morning while it was still dark and the police had cordoned off all the roads leading up there.

  • There was just a huge police presence.

  • And at about 8 o'clock this morning here in Seoul, the officers tried to go up to the president's home to arrest him, but they were thwarted.
