We're going to be listening to some clips that I've really enjoyed from my conversations in 2024 with the many and varied guests that have come on the show.
To kick things off.
I always ask my guests about their childhood and the role that games had on that time of their life, and as well, some of the experiences that they may have had during their formative years that went on to be instructive in whatever career they went onto.
So here we're going to be hearing from the novelist Holly Grimacio, the director of Final Fantasy vii, Yoshinori Kitase, and the writer Kelsey Beecham from the classic indie title Outer Wilds, all telling us about their childhood experiences my younger brothers got for their combined Christmas and birthday present.
They both had born quite near Christmas, which was extremely useful for like, pooling their desires for presents, a SNES and a couple of games, which about two months before Christmas, my mum and I set up one evening just to.
To double check that, that it worked, you know, so that we didn't get to Christmas Day and then we don't have all of the cords and the boys are crying and it's all a disaster.
So we set that up, tried, tried one of the games, went, yes, this works great.
Good on us.
We have preemptively saved Christmas.
And then essentially just played it for another two hours, then packed it up back into the box, went to the back of mum and my stepdad's wardrobe.
And then the next evening we're like, ah, it probably still works, but maybe we should double check that.
So over the course of essentially two months before Christmas, we played through the entirety of Mikashi's island and another game before my brothers ever got it.
And then when they opened it on Christmas, we were magically, incredibly good at it and could help them with all of the hard bits.
And this is essentially one of the very first times I'd played a console game.
I played games on the computers, school and so forth.
But it was really a kind of starting from scratch.
What do these buttons do?
How does this work kind of thing.
Just this really extraordinary couple of secret months where my mum and I worked together to figure out how to operate this little guy, this little character.
