With just another two weeks to go until Donald Trump's inauguration, it appears clear that Russia and Ukraine are trying to consolidate as much territory in this ongoing conflict as possible for Ukraine.
Over the past 24 hours, this has reportedly included a stepped up incursion into Russia's own Kursk region, where it first gained a foothold back in August.
Ukraine is no doubt hoping that any land it gains within Russia could in turn be traded for Russian occupied land in Ukraine.
