  • We're coming to you live from London.

  • I'm James Menendez.

  • And we're going to begin today in Los Angeles and what is now a series of wildfires raging in and around the city, fanned by powerful winds, so much so that firefighters say the blazes are impossible to contain at the moment with red hot embers being scattered over a larger and larger area.

  • The worst fire is ripping through the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood west of downtown and between the hills and the sea.

  • More than 30,000 people have had to leave their homes, many of which have been swallowed up by the flames.

  • Jonathan Viliotis, correspondent with our partners at CBS News, is there.

  • We're here at the heart of the Pacific Palisades in a neighborhood that is a total loss.

  • You've got a home here.

  • I'm going to flip over here.

  • Another home lost when we go over this way.

  • Homes down, this street gone, this one completely leveled.
