Chinese lawmakers are deliberating a draft of the country's first law specifically focusing on the development and protection of the private sector at the ongoing session of the 14th National People's Congress Standing Committee.
As Feng Yi Lei reports, the draft addresses issues critical to private enterprises and entrepreneurs.
It marks a historic moment as the Law on Private Economy promotion is set to become China's first foundational legislation specifically aimed at fostering the development of the private sector.
And its legislative process has gained widespread attention from across the country, which just reflects the critical role that private enterprises play in China's economy and lawmakers say the proposed law seeks to codify effective policies and practices from the nation reforms, particularly those established since the 18th CPC National Congress.
And by formalizing these reforms into law, it aims to address public concerns, boost confidence in private sector growth, and create a robust legal environment for all forms of economic ownership to thrive.

As of September 2024, over 55 million private enterprises have been registered nationwide, and these businesses not only provide employment opportunities across diverse sectors, but also spearhead technological innovation and industrial upgrading.
And the draft law encompasses provisions addressing issues critical to private enterprises and entrepreneurs, and these include, for example, ensuring fair market competition, protecting property rights, and improving financial accessibility.
And it also addresses concerns like arbitrary administrative interference and excessive law enforcement measures, which detailed rules to regulate investigations, prevent abuse of power, and protect the legal rights of private businesses.
