  • You're listening to the Briefing, first broadcast on the 10th of January, 2025 on Monocle Radio.

  • Hello, and a warm welcome to the Briefing coming to you live from Studio one here at Midori House in London.

  • I'm Emma Nelson.

  • And coming up on today's program, we.

  • Have to be here to say that we are against this development in this country.

  • Demonstrators take to the streets of Vienna as the far right stands on the cusp of forming a government.

  • I'll have the latest on what could be a more extreme direction for Austria.

  • Also ahead in the next 30 minutes, our Paris bureau chief will join me to bring us an update on the trial of the former French president Nicolas Sarkousi, who stands accused of brokering a deal to fund his presidential campaign with Libya.

  • Plus, Taiwan has always been a country that is rather conservative when it comes to visa launch for foreigners coming to Taiwan.

  • Taiwan issues nomad visas, but does it actually want anybody to apply?

  • All that plus the latest design news too, that's right here on the Briefing with me, Emma Nelson.

  • Talks are beginning once again in Vienna to try to form a government.

  • With the centrist parties unable to reach agreement, it has now become the turn of the far right, the fpo, the Freedom Party, to see if they can do a more successful job.

  • Well, Alexei Korrylov, his Monocle's Vienna correspondent, and he joins us on the line now from the Austrian capital.

  • A very good afternoon to you, Alexei.

  • Good afternoon, Emma.

  • So just bring us up to date as to how we are here, because when we had the elections last year, the FBO won the biggest number of seats, but trying to keep them out of government was the aim of all the parties and they ultimately failed, didn't they?

  • That's correct.

  • That's exactly right.

  • I mean, this sort of thing, this sort of political upheaval usually happens in Austria around Christmas.
