With extensive wildfires in Los Angeles, we look at the longer-term health impacts of wildfires and why there is still a risk to health after a fire is extinguished. A global commission has called for an overhaul of how obesity is diagnosed, suggesting more measures for practitioners to help distinguish between different types of obesity and improve individualized care for each patient. In Guatemala, reporter Jane Chambers takes us along to a local project supporting residents to transition away from ultra-processed food and towards more traditional eating habits. Also on the show, in light of 2024 surpassing global climate warming limits of 1.5°C we find out how climate change is impacting HIV prevention and care. Plus, how abortion patients in the UK demonstrate shifting contraception choices, with a rise in ‘natural’ fertility options. Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Katie Tomsett & Jack Lee

  • Hello and welcome to Health Check from the BBC.

  • I'm Claudia Hammond here for the next half an hour with the latest health stories from around the world.

  • As many as a billion people globally are now living with obesity.

  • But do we need a new approach to the measuring and defining of what counts as obesity?

  • And why are more women turning to so called natural fertility methods and apps as contraception?

  • My guest for the whole show this week is Professor Monica Lackenpahl from the Institute of Child Health at University College London.

  • Hi Monica, how are you?

  • Hello.

  • Great to be with you again.

  • Well, I'm sure like many of us, you've been watching the pictures of the wildfires in Los Angeles and we've heard about the lives lost and of course the huge number of homes and businesses which have burnt down.

  • But we wanted to look at some of the impacts that wildfires can have on health in the long term.

  • Lucy Sheriff is a BBC reporter who lives in California and found her own street was in the path of the fire.

  • The evacuation process was pretty panicked and chaotic because everybody was trying to leave at once.

  • And like I said, you just have this one road in and out.

  • Luckily, I was able to get out fairly quickly, but it was just.

  • Yeah, it was a.

  • It was a scary and unnerving experience because I'm used to reporting on wildfires, not evacuating from them.
