Eddie Chacon shot to fame as part of the duo Charles & Eddie, alongside the late Charles Pettigrew, with the release of their enduring 1992 single ‘Would I Lie to You?’ In the years after Charles & Eddie amicably split in 1997, Chacon explored another passion of his: fashion photography. But music called him back and, in 2020, he released the solo album ‘Pleasure, Joy and Happiness’, followed by ‘Sundown’ in 2023. Now he has returned with the gorgeous new record ‘Lay Low’. On today’s show, Chacon joins Robert Bound in the studio to discuss his unique, heartfelt strain of R&B and the inspiration behind the dreamy tracks on his new record. Hello and welcome to Monocle on Culture.
I'm Robert Bounds.
On today's show, we are sitting down with the singer Eddie Chacon as half of the duo Charles and Eddie, alongside the late Charles Pettigrew.
Eddie's most well known output is undoubtedly this barnstormer of a single from 1992.
In the years after Charles and Eddie amicably split in 1997, Eddie explored another passion of his fashion photography.
But as we'll hear, music called him back and in 2020, he released the solo album Pleasure, Joy and happiness, followed by 2023's Sundown, both produced by friend of the programme, John Carroll Kirby.
Now he returns with a gorgeous new record, Lay Low, which is out on the 31st of January and produced by Nick Hakim, of whom we're also very fond.
Eddie's unique strain of R and B is heartfelt and rich with personal experience, such as the loss of his mother.
Lelo is a stunning, dreamy record which instantly draws you in with a track list of subtle, soulful anthems.
I was delighted to be joined in the studio by Eddie Chacon, a fan of Monocle.
As it turns out, holding on to what we have can't let it slip away I can never say the words I've always wanted to say Everything we and it's like an empire that we built upon the same Everything we have is like an empire that we built.
Upon the same and I'm delighted that Eddie joins us now.
Thank you so much for your time today, Eddie, and congratulations on Lay Low.
Thank you.
Yeah, it's a pleasure to be here.
I love Monocle magazine for many years, so I was quite pleasantly surprised that I'd be coming here to talk to you today.
Well, there's been a lot of people in the building, I understand, sort of blushingly asking when Eddie's gonna turn up.
So there might be some mutual autographs.
Oh, that's really sweet.
As I said before we switched on the mics, Eddie, I've been spending some quality time with Lelo.
