35 分钟You're listening to the Briefing, first broadcast on the 4th of February, 2025 on Monocle Radio.
Hello, and a warm welcome to the Briefing, broadcasting live from Studio one here at Midori House in London.
I'm Emma Nelson.
And coming up on today's program, the retaliation begins.
China slaps tariffs on the import of goods after tariffs imposed by the US Begin to kick in.
We'll have the latest also ahead in the next 30 minutes.
And if the government of China in a conflict tells them shut down the Panama Canal, they will have to.
The US Secretary of State tells Panama to change its policy on the canal.
We'll look at Washington's intensified focus on its own backyard.
Plus, we'll hear why, although God is love, falling in love if you work for him,
isn't allowed as a couple are fired for getting married while working at the Vatican.
And a celebration of our cuddly Finnish friends as The Moomins turn 80.
That's all coming up right here on the Briefing with me, Emma Nelson.
In the last few hours, China has imposed counter tariffs on US Imports.
The move came just after President Donald Trump placed an additional 10 levy on the import of Chinese goods,
and that kicked in at midnight local time.
To tell us what is happening and to offer some context as well,
I'm joined now by Isabel Hilton, founder of China Dialogue,
a visiting professor at King's College London's Lao Institute, and a regular voice on China here on Monocle Radio.
Welcome back, Isabelle.
