My name is Kim Barker,
and I'm an international correspondent for the New York Times, based in London.
Last summer, I found myself working in Ukraine for the first time.
I was expecting to write about the usual things you cover in a war.
Combat, ptsd, civilian casualties.
And I did.
But also, I found Alicia.
Hello.
Hi.
My name is Alyssa.
My name is Kim Kard.
Kim, nice to meet you.
Alicia is 40 years old.
She wears a typical summer uniform of black T shirts and black shorts.
She usually ties her blonde hair back in a loose ponytail.
Doesn't wear a lot of makeup.
We met to talk about a drone pilot course she was teaching.
But as we started talking, Alicia told me about a different school she runs.
A theater school, by the way.
We are making a performance about American teenagers.
