When Donald Trump was running for his second term as president last year,
he gave plenty of hints that he didn't care all
that much about staying chummy with our European allies.
For example, he once said if NATO countries didn't pay their fair share,
he would encourage Russia to, quote, do whatever the hell they want.
So maybe no one should be surprised a year later
that he
and members of his administration are spending their first few weeks
in office offending their allies
and shaking up the world order.
But it is kind of surprising, at least the speed of it and the dismissive tone.
For example, Vice President J.D.
vance telling EU leadership, some of whom he referred to as commissars,
that their countries were suppressing free speech.
Or Donald Trump repeating Russian propaganda about the war in Ukraine.
